I was particularly drawn to the setting of Charleston. By placing the story in a city known for its romance and history, you create a backdrop that is both beautiful and evocative. The focus on two educators, on their unexpected connection, gives the story a groundedness that balances the intensity of the passion.
There is also a balance between the romantic and the dramatic. The realities of intense desire and erotic passion are acknowledged without becoming the sole focus of the story. Instead, they become the context for a larger drama about jealousy, envy, and the lengths to which others will go to destroy what they cannot have. You treat the love between Tristan and Evelyn as something that is tested and proven, and the title, A Love as Strong as Death, is both a promise and a warning.
As an author, I admire work that respects the romance genre while engaging with the darker forces that can threaten love.
